Hey y’all, it’s me, Ted—talking again about the amazing ecosystem we’re so lucky to share.
Did you know Tennessee is the most biologically diverse state in the nation without a coastline? Much of our state’s incredible richness comes in very small packages. When we think of pollinators, honeybees and butterflies usually steal the spotlight. But Tennessee is home to a fascinating cast of unsung heroes that deserve some serious recognition.
These fuzzy little insects look remarkably like tiny bees, but they’re actually flies—and exceptionally good pollinators.
Capable of hovering almost motionless over a blossom before landing to feed on nectar, these insects are double-duty helpers. Their larvae even eat garden pests like aphids!
A variety of native flower-visiting beetles quietly move pollen around as they crawl across blossoms.
One of my absolute favorites. These moths move and hover so much like hummingbirds that they often trick the eye!
Larvae hosts: native honeysuckle, hawthorn trees, snowberry, and coralberry.
Adult nectar dources: Bee balm, phlox, and milkweed.
Trust me: You will never forget the first time you spot a hummingbird moth hovering in your garden!
We can support these overlooked creatures simply by planting more of what Tennessee naturally provides.
Native flowering plants—like goldenrod, asters, coneflowers, milkweed, mountain mint, and native sunflowers—offer high-value nectar and pollen. Mix plants that bloom at different times to keep the buffet open from spring through fall.
A true pollinator haven needs more than just flowers:
Leave patches of bare soil for ground-nesting bees.
Keep fallen leaves and hollow stems in place for overwintering habitat.
Provide a shallow dish of water.
Just say no to pesticides.
Remember: A little untidiness can grow a lot more life.
