Bald Eagle
The Bald Eagle pictured here is an immature one, noted by the mottled white feathers on the head. The well-known adult bird of this species has a completely white head. This is one of five Bald Eagles ever admitted to HWRC, and it was treated for an injured wing and released.
The Bald Eagle is on the U.S. Endangered Species List. That means it is considered in danger of becoming extinct in the entire continental United States except Alaska. The dramatic decline in the Bald Eagle population was caused by harmful pesticides widely used until the mid-seventies. However, thanks to conservation efforts over the last few decades, the bird has seen a resurgeance in its numbers. With continued attention to the species, we hope to one day see this national symbol out of danger completely.
